MetLife Foundation, Opa-locka Community Development Corp., City of Opa-locka and KaBOOM! Team Up to

More than 200 volunteers from MetLife Foundation; Cypress Financial Group, an office of MetLife; Opa-locka Community Development Corp.; the City of Opa-locka; organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the Opa-locka community will join forces on Friday, Jan. 24,to build a new playground at Magnolia North Playground. The design is based on children’s drawings created at a special event in November.

A playground is more than a playground. It’s a brain-expander, friend-maker, and muscle-builder. Play is central to a child’s ability to grow into a productive adult. It can transform children from sedentary, bored and solitary to physically, mentally and socially active. Since 1996, KaBOOM! has been dedicated to the bold goal of ensuring that all children get the balance of active play they need to become healthy and successful adults.

The new playground will bring more than 350 kids in Opa-locka one step closer to having the childhood they deserve. Currently, every week, more than 100 Opa-locka kids enjoy outdoor playtime on jungle gyms at each of the city’s parks: Segal, Ingram and Sherbondy Village. Local residents access the city’s parks for afterschool, aquatic and sports programs and recreational fishing. The addition of the Magnolia North playground signifies great improvements made by community residents and partnering agencies to make the historic but distressed community safe for children to play.

The new playspace is being funded through a grant from MetLife Foundation with Cypress Financial Group, an office of MetLife, providing volunteers and sweat equity. Through this partnership, more children will have the joyful childhood they deserve and get the play they need to become healthy and successful adults.
